Letter Writing Hints & Tips

At various stages in your life you’ll want to write a letter or card. It can be anything from a letter of love, a message of sympathy or friendship, or a message to an organisation.

To help you make an impact, here's some hints and tips you can use when writing various types of letters.

Quick hints

  • Letters or cards don’t have to be long - just a line or two can still make an impact.
  • Notes can be about what you are up to, or what your family is up to.
  • In all, notes are brief and aim to get your point across quickly.
  • Remember, layout is not as important as the meaning of what you write.
  • Use your imagination, and humour!

Before you start

  • Check you have the most current postal address for the person you are writing to.
  • Think about all the things you would like to write about.
