Up, up and away… new Balloon stamps set sail

As ballooning in this country celebrates its 150th anniversary, Australia Post gives rise to the occasion with the launch of a new stamp series Up, Up and Away.

With ballooning enjoyed by many enthusiasts, casual participants and tourists alike, Australia Post is confident the series will take off, as Group Manager Philatelic Mr. Noel Leahy explains.

“This stamp series shows just how popular ballooning has become, with images depicting flights over Sydney’s Harbour, Victoria’s Mt Feathertop Alpine National Park, Canberra and the Northern Territory’s MacDonnell Ranges.  The different seasons illustrated also show that this has become a year-round enjoyment for huge numbers of people who delight in the spectacular views on offer around the country” said Mr. Leahy.

Regarded as the pioneer of ballooning in Australia, William Dean successfully navigated a 13km flight over Melbourne using a gas-filled balloon in 1858.  He then emulated his achievement some months later with a triumphant flight over Sydney Harbour.

Since then hot air ballooning has evolved to become a major tourist attraction for visitors overseas as well as locals treating one another to the ultimate celebratory gift or aerial experience.

Designer Beth McKinlay has used her illustration skills to create rich, iconic Australian vistas complete with majestic hot air balloons of myriad colours.  The Up, Up and Away balloon series launches on Tuesday 6 May 2008.

The Up, Up and Away stamps are available from participating Australia Post outlets and via mail order on 1800 331 794. Overseas collectors can place orders online at www.auspost.com.au/stamps.  Stamps are available from Tuesday 6 May in several collectable formats including First Day Covers, Stamp Packs, Stamp Booklet, Prestige Booklet and Maxicards.
