Australian Architecture Celebrated on Stamps

10 July, 2007

Four of Australia’s iconic urban buildings are celebrated with the release of Australia Post’s Landmarks: Australian Modernist Architecture stamp issue. Melbourne’s former ICI House, Canberra’s Australian Academy of Science, Perth’s Council House and the Sydney Opera House feature in the issue, which aims to present exemplars of Australia’s modernist architecture to the Australian public.

Mr Noel Leahy, Australia Post Group Manager, Philatelic, explains the motivation behind the series:

“The Landmarks: Australian Modernist Architecture stamps are an opportunity to celebrate Australia’s design heritage and to consider some of the outstanding buildings of the 1950s, which have contributed to Australian cities and culture. The stamps will bring some of Australia’s most notable modernist buildings to the attention of the general public.”

As well as being chosen for their design brilliance, the buildings demonstrate various design solutions and materials. Together they recognise the built heritage of four Australian states, on both the east and west coasts.

“We believe that these buildings reflect the optimism and aspirations of the period,” said Mr Leahy, “as well as design and technological advancements”.

The stamp issue design is the work of Gary Domoney, who enjoys a strong reputation for his work both within Australia and internationally, having worked for renowned studios such as Cato Purnell Partners, Emery Vincent Design and Enterprise IG. Mr Domoney, who is now with Spark Studio, was also responsible for Australia Post’s Landmark Australian Bridges (2004) and Melbourne Commonwealth Games (2006) stamp issues.

Landmarks: Australian Modernist Architecture will be available from participating Australia Post outlets from 10 July 2007 or via mail order on 1800 331 794. The philatelic range includes a miniature sheet, stamp pack, first day cover and set of maxicards. Overseas customers can purchase online at www.auspost.com.au/stamps
