The Perth GPO PostShop will be temporarily relocated during planned refurbishment of the GPO Building, which will restore this Perth icon to its former glory.
Australia Post is refurbishing the GPO Building including the development of a new GPO PostShop on the ground floor. These refurbishment plans align with State Government plans for the redevelopment of 140 William Street.
From 19 February the PostShop will be located at Shops 2 and 5a Perth Central, Murray Street in the Target Arcade.
“The temporary PostShop will operate out of two smaller shopfronts during this time due to a shortage of appropriate shop space nearby to the GPO Building,” said State Communications Manager, Suzanne Short. “For this reason we ask our customers to, where possible, utilise one of seven nearby PostShops in the CBD as an alternative during this time.”
The works associated with the refurbishment of the ground floor of the GPO building are scheduled to be completed late this year at which time the Perth GPO PostShop will return to the GPO building.
“While in the temporary tenancy, basic postal services will be provided including sale of postage stamps, identity verification services, acceptance of mail and Postbillpay,” Ms Short said. “A limited range of merchandise will be available, however, it is requested that customers wishing to post large items or large volumes of mail utilise an alternate nearby postal outlet.”
From 5 February, for the duration of the refurbishment, the Post Restante service (care of post office mail) will be transferred to 66 St Georges Terrace PostShop.
The temporary relocation will not affect GPO Post Office Box services.
Hours of operation will be altered to 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 9:00am – 12:30pm. There will be no trading on Saturday 17 February as the move will take place over that weekend.
Due to the historical significance of the building, Post has liaised closely with both the Heritage Council of Western Australia and the Department of Environment and Heritage. Both groups have endorsed the works proposed which include conservation work to the Coat of Arms and other external maintenance works.
