Getting Started

The First Steps

The following steps will assist you to get started with metering:

  1. Contact a postage meter supplier to discuss your mailing needs.
  2. Select an approved postage meter that suits your budget and mailing requirements.
  3. Your supplier will provide you with a copy of our Conditions of Use for Postage Meters and Franking Machines. (pdf 325kb. Adobe Acrobat is required to read this file. If you cannot access the file, call 13 13 18). Complete the licence application form in section 15.
  4. Your supplier will forward the application to us for processing and we will advise you of the outcome by mail.

Upon signing the application form, you automatically become the holder of an interim licence. This means that you can start using your postage meter as soon as it is installed at your premises.

Choosing a Postage Meter

Customers can choose from any of the approved postage meters. When selecting a meter, customers should consider the following points:

  • Printing Speed - Your average mail volumes and mailing patterns will determine the printing speed you require.

  • Operating Costs - Basic model meters are available for lease from around $20 - $40 per week. The price depends on the machine's printing speed and extra features like weighing scales or an envelope feeding device.

  • Additional Metering Costs - These may include consumables such as ink and adhesive labels, costs for modem resetting, resetting fees if applicable, and service or maintenance charges.

  • Lease, Rent or Purchase? - Consider the benefits of leasing or renting a meter. This gives you scope to upgrade your meter if you need to, giving you the freedom to take advantage of new technology as it becomes available.

  • Staff Training - As with certain new equipment, some training may be required for meter operators. Ask your supplier about training.

  • Large Volume Mailers - Businesses sending large volumes of mail may also have other considerations to take into account when selecting an appropriate postage meter.

For advice on which meter best suits your needs and for information on the features of the approved postage meters please contact the postage meter suppliers.
