Overview
Australia Post will deliver some items that aid the visually impaired free of charge or at concessional rates.
Eligible items include:
- Correspondence, documents or literature wholly written in embossed characters as used by the blind - that is, Braille or Moon
- Aids for the teaching of Braille to the blind
- Plates for embossing literature for the blind
- Special paper intended solely for the blind, on condition that any communication on the paper is wholly in Braille or Moon
- Any form of speech recording for the use of the blind.
Letters that contain any other item not in this list are not eligible for the concessional rate.
Eligible participants
To attract the concessional rate, either the sender or the recipient of an article for the blind must be a blind person, or an institution or organisation recognised by Australia Post as one that serves the needs of blind people.
What you need to do
When sending items they must have the name and address of the sender on the outside of the envelope as well as the Articles for the Blind Label (available at Post Offices) or the words "Materials for the Use of the Blind" or similar.
Rates within Australia
Letters and parcels up to 7 kilograms are delivered free of charge.
International Rates
Sea Mail
- Parcels up to 7 kilograms are delivered free of charge.
Air Mail
- Items up to 250g are delivered free of charge
- Items over 250 g up to 500g cost 50 cents, and a further 50 cents per each 500g thereafter.
