Some of the images of Queen Elizabeth II featured on the new Australia Post Jubilee stamp product range are the work of 20th Century English photographer Dorothy Wilding.
Born in England in 1893, Wilding went on to become England’s most successful portrait photographer and the first woman to be granted ‘By Appointment’ status to the royal family.
Wilding was not only a great photographer, but also a great lighting technician, and this, when combined with her distinct artistic flair produced some of the greatest photographic portraits of the last century.
Wilding’s series of portraits used in the new Australia Post release show a young monarch which were taken just prior to her accession to the throne.
Back in 1953, Australia Post (then the Postmaster’s - General Department) used the Wilding images for their base postage rate and the first Australian Queen’s stamp issue of that year.
